The art of Russian lacquer miniature is a unique aspect of folk decorative and applied art and one that is closely linked with national tradition. Black lacquer boxes, snuff-boxes, match-boxes, cigarette-cases, tea caddies, purses, albums, and toilet boxes of various shapes and sizes decorated with the subtlest painting have been created in Fedoskino, a village in the environs of Moscow, for over two centuries. Generations of masters developed the local technique of oil-painted miniatures, rooted in the craft of glazing over enamel and Russian miniature portraits of the 18th to the 19th centuries.
   Lacquer miniature painting brings one into the world of images, the product  of the artist's imagination. It is distinguished for its delicate form, subtle brushwork, sophisticated colour combinations and poetic character of images.
